Middleham Castle, Middleham, Wensleydale🏴
Anne Neville the daughter of the notorious Richard, ‘the Kingmaker’ Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, lived here with her family during the 15th century. Anne married Richard Duke of Gloucester and was crowned queen of England 6 July 1483 alongside king Richard III. Their only son was born at Middleham Castle. Not much is known or recorded about her, but she was at the centre of the War of the Roses.
Middleham Castle was also at the heart of the War of the Roses, King Edward IV was imprisoned at Middleham for a short time, having been captured by the Earl of Warwick in 1469. How must his wife Elizabeth Woodville have felt, fearing for the lives of her children.
By the 17th century the castle became a public quarry by which many of the buildings in Middleham were created.
