Lily and Iris is a vibrant and expressive floral painting inspired by my great-grandmother Lily, whom I knew and loved dearly, and her sister-in-law Iris, whose story has faded from family memory, she was possibly a suffragette, I'd like to think she was. Their shared flower names became the starting point for this contemporary artwork — a modern reimagining of the rich still life traditions of seventeenth-century Dutch artists such as Rachel Ruysch. Painted in luminous layers of oil on paper, the piece captures the movement, texture, and emotional energy of flowers in bloom. It’s a celebration of memory and womanhood — a floral artwork where history, imagination, and colour come alive.
