Golden Age brings together flowers from different seasons and symbolic worlds — tulips, roses, sunflowers — arranged without concern for botanical accuracy or time, in homage to the Dutch Golden Age of painting.
The work was painted during a period of intense reflection on time — how quickly it moves, and how easily we fail to notice when we’re already inside the moments we’ll one day long for. At the time, we were in our first house together, looking forward to our wedding. I was working from a makeshift studio in the yard here in York, a space I loved for its closeness to daily life.
Flowers traditionally symbolise beauty, abundance, and impermanence. In this work, they are not arranged for perfection but allowed to exist with their own energy — leaning, clashing, holding space. The palette draws from Dutch Golden Age still life, where paintings carried layered meanings about life, labour, and mortality, but here those references are softened and reimagined through a contemporary, lived experience.
This painting is about the past and present coming together. It is both a homage to 17th-century artists and a reflection on how what we often call a “golden age” is only named in hindsight — a reminder that ordinary, domestic moments can hold just as much richness as monumental ones.
Printed at A2 to retain the physicality and movement of the original brushwork. Each print is part of a small, carefully produced edition of 25.
