In A Distant Era, I sought to conjure the sensation of a half‑remembered fragment of history—something that feels both timeless and vividly present. By borrowing the elegant composition of Rachel Ruysch’s Flowers in a Glass Vase (1704) and reinterpreting it through loose, gestural brushwork and energetic oil‑pastel accents, I aim to spark a conversation across centuries. Muted ochres and deep crimsons pay homage to 17th‑century palettes, while the restless surface gestures insist on our contemporary moment.
This piece is a meditation on the resilience of women’s creative legacies, inviting viewers to reconnect with artists who have long been overlooked and to celebrate their enduring presence in today’s art world.
